Crochet Coin Purse in Catherine Wheel Stitch

Finally, I am indulging in my passion in this blog post. I hope I'll maintain my interest to keep blogging with lots of patterns, stitches and techniques.


It's a simple purse; can be easily done by crocheting a rectangular piece of fabric. The stitch used is Catherine Wheel Stitch, mentioned in more detail below.

Catherine Wheel Stitch



To begin, chain multiple of 10 sts + 6 + 1 for base chain.
The first row starts on the wrong side.

Special Abbreviation: CL (Cluster) - (yo, insert hook, yo, draw loop through. yo, draw through 2 loops) over the number of sts indicated. yo and draw through all loops on hook.

Row 1: 1sc into 2nd ch from hook. 1sc into next ch. *Miss 3ch, 7dc into next ch, miss 3ch, 1sc into each of next 3ch. Rep from * to last 4ch, miss 3ch, 4dc into last ch. Turn.

Row 2: 1ch, 1sc into 1st st, 1sc into next st. *3ch, 1CL over next 7sts. 3ch, 1sc into each of next 3 sts. Rep from * to last 4 sts. 3ch, 1CL over last 4sts. Miss tch. Turn.

Row 3: 3ch (counts as 1dc). 3dc into 1st st. *Miss 3ch, 1sc into each of next 3sc. Miss 3ch. 7dc into loop which closed CL in previous row. Rep from * ending with miss 3ch, 1sc into each of last 2sc. Miss tch. Turn.

Row 4: 3ch (counts as 1dc). Miss 1st st. 1CL over next 3sts. *3ch, 1sc into each of next 3sts, 3ch. 1CL over next 7sts. Rep from * ending with 3ch, 1sc into next st. 1sc into top of tch. Turn.

Row 5: 1ch, 1sc into each of 1st 2sc. * Miss 3ch, 7dc into loop which closed CL in previous row. Miss 3ch, 1sc into each of next 3sc. Rep from * ending with miss 3ch, 4dc into top of tch. Turn.

Rep from Row 2 through Row 5 to continue.

Given above is the basic stitch pattern for Catherine Wheel.
To make a variation with 2 colors as in the coin purse pattern above, work-
Row 1 - Color A
Row 2 & 3 - Color B
Row 4 & 5 - Color A & so on...
